The issue starts with a flashback to one year ago. Cultists in blue robes are gathering in a caste to worship at an idol. There is a flash of flame and a bearded man (Savitar) appears and begins to laugh maniacally.

The action cuts to the present day. Jay Garrick is struggling to get down a plant pot in his house. He drops it so his speed kicks in and he tries to catch it. Suddenly he loses his speed and the pot drops.

Jesse Chambers is out on a date when thugs attack her car. Her boyfriend tries to stand up for her but the thugs drive away. Jesse kicks in the superspeed and chases after them. She just reaches their bullets when her speed stops. She falls to the ground.

The Kapatalist Kouriers are late for a pressing delivery. Cassio decides to shorten the journey by running up the side of the building. Halfway up he loses superspeed and falls to his death.

Wally and Linda are at an outside restaurant eating and critiqueing other couples. They begin to stray into serious conversation and discuss marriage when out of the blue, Ninjas attack. Wally leaps to them and looks around for help but no-one else can see them - they are moving in superspeed. He eventually fights them out and captures one of them, but the only remaining ninja is unconscious.

Jay and Jesse appear and confront Wally about their lack of powers. Since he is now mainlining the force, the figure he has drained their energy. Wally protests this but resigns himself to help.

Johnny Quick meets Iris West at a motorway bar. She warns Johnny that he must accept Max's lessons about the Speed Force as in this battle coming up, a life hangs in the balance. Johnny gets up to leave the bar and speed away but finds that his speed reserves have dissapeared. It is the first time his powers have failed him.

Wally notices that the ninja he left is awake and trying to escape. He grabs him and dangles him of a building. The ninja tells Wally that he is from Savitar and will eliminate all the true students of the lightning. After he has said that, he crumbles into dust. The speedsters decide to enquire about Savitar with Max Mercury.

In Savitar's castle we can see that he is torturing a hanging human. He beats him savagely and then gives him to his ninjas to kill. The man they are torturing is Max Mercury.

Wally lends Jay and Jesse his speed and they head for Max and Bart's house. In Bart's house though, he and XS are being attacked by Savitar's ninjas.
